NIGHTMARE
noun
“something (such as an experience, situation, or object) having the monstrous character of a nightmare or producing a feeling of anxiety or terror”
Merriam-Webster
To a parent, unexpected sickness, severe illnesses and hospital stays for our children are nightmares. Here's a quick look at mental first aid for parents when our children are sick.
After welcoming their child, a new parent often hears, “I know now what it feels to have your heart existing outside of your body.” The human heart…connected to our thoughts and our feelings. Children embody our thoughts and feelings walking and existing outside of our bodies.
“They” don’t tell you that this same heart gets stuck in your throat when you are throttled with anxiety in a health situation with your child! A new baby makes a journey to the NICU, an extended virus or illness, an admission to Children's Hospital…
Good, bad or indifferent, you are here with your child.
BREATHE
You are in the best possible place for your child.
BREATHE
You are the best person for your child when they are sick or hurt.
BREATHE
You are your child’s best advocate.
BREATHE
But YOU need to take care of yourself.
I’m not talking about meditation, coffee dates with your friends. That’s all well and good preventatively. But in all honesty, for most of us, kumbaya around the campfire doesn’t work when you are scared and worried about your child.
Eat–this will not look like your usual routine! Eat small meals. The healthier the better if your stomach Is nervous and upset.
Hydrate–always have a water bottle with you that you can fill. Straws help!
Sleep–think cat naps, a little amounts to some which is better than none. Sleep deprivation is very real and very unhelpful.
Explicitly use resources–ask friends family point blank, “Can you please take the other kiddos to the park or lunch? Can they have a sleepover?” Etc
Keep all other serious life issues on the back burner if possible, i.e. avoid talking about finances with your spouse during these high stress times
Utilize your therapist and doctor!
They are here for just these reasons, so call to talk, adjust meds, etc. Care exists at various levels. If you need someone to talk to, you can always utilize it.
AND BREATHE. Sounds silly but our breath is a direct link to our nervous system. It’s the one thing we can control when everything else feels out of control.
So BREATHE. You will get through it. Hopefully, with the help of some resources.
